Setting the Scene

Service Provided: Beauty Training

Unilever is a multinational company specializing in producing of food, beverages, cleaning products, and personal care items (fast-moving consumer goods or FMCG). With 90 years of presence in Indonesia, Unilever has become one of the largest FMCG companies, dominating consumer spending and usage nationwide.

As an FMCG company, Unilever strives to stay at the forefront of consumers’ minds. To achieve this, Unilever continually works to motivate its beauty advisors, who represent the company on the front lines. With this in mind, Unilever approached Venas Consulting to provide training for their Sales Beauty Advisors (SBA), helping them stay up-to-date with the latest beauty trends and insights to remain relevant. Furthermore, Venas helped the company to provide the SBA with additional skills needed to boost sales, such as content creation and more.

The Strategy

We provided a set of training modules and on-site evaluation through an assessment guide to test out participants’ understanding of the module. 

Results

For this training, we created 5 class sessions to help participants level up their skills in specific topics. Each session lasts around 2 to 3 hours, completed with pre-tests and post-tests to measure how well the participants understood the material after the class. The topics covered include:

1. Skincare 101

To help consumers better, participants need to understand the topics that frequently come up in the skincare industry. This includes things like skin types, skin concerns, which of the ingredients are suitable for a certain skin concerns, current popular products that consumers are looking for, and more.

2. Beauty Trends

In this session, we shared insights about the key ingredients found in Unilever’s products and their main benefits in boosting product knowledge. We also covered some of the latest beauty trends in 2024, so participants can stay relevant and in tune with what customers are after.

3. Customer Engagement

It’s crucial to understand the types of customers who shop with us, so we can approach them in the best way possible. This part of the training aimed to equip participants with knowledge about different customer personas that Venas has specifically developed by observing the consumers’ behavior in the beauty industry along with each of the persona expectations, so the participants can handle them better.

4. Social Media 101

Unilever has a vision where beauty advisors don’t just promote products in offline stores but also become active in advocating for Unilever products online, eventually becoming influencers themselves. This session dove into the different types of social media platforms and the varying audiences that use them. Understanding these differences is key to maximizing engagement across the board.

5. Content creation 

After introducing participants to social media platforms, we provided a beginner-friendly content creation workshop to give participants some direction on where and how to start creating their content.

Conclusions

The tailored training program we provided for Unilever’s SBA successfully equipped them with essential knowledge and skills to thrive in today’s competitive beauty landscape. From understanding skincare and beauty trends to mastering customer engagement and content creation, participants can stay relevant and provide even better service to their customers. The pre-test and post-test designs showed significant improvement in their understanding, highlighting the effectiveness of the sessions. By combining product knowledge with social media savvy, this training helped Unilever’s team stay ahead in both the offline and online spaces, boosting their confidence and improving their role both as beauty advisors and influencers.
